Albarn rolls in with Africa Express

Blur singer Damon Albarn rolled into Glasgow on the Africa Express with members of his newest project ahead of their gig in the city.

The Gorillaz star and dozens of other musicians stepped off the train at platform 11 of Central Station where a crowd had gathered to welcome them.

They will perform at The Arches as part of a week-long tour around Britain.

The event is part of the London 2012 Festival and also kicks off the club's 21st birthday celebrations.

Africa Express brings together musicians from different cultures, genres and generations. It aims to break boundaries and offer a new perspective on Africa and its music.

It started in 2006, when Albarn took DJ Fatboy Slim and singers Martha Wainright and Jamie T to Mali to work with African artists including Toumani Diabate and Salif Keita.

The ensemble played a trial gig in London a few years ago before performing at Glastonbury Festival in 2007.

Each gig they play is said to be a series of "on-the-spot" collaborations and the line-up often changes.

Albarn said: "It's an amazing mix of people, like 80 musicians have got off that train and we've all been playing together now for about three to four days and we're starting to get a real synergy going and there's some amazing music about. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

"It's just something about that whole continent, we call it Africa but you know it's like 50 odd nations. They call it world music but it's 1,000 different ideas"
