Stones among film festival stars

The Rolling Stones are among the names expected on the red carpet at this year's London Film Festival.

The veteran rockers are likely to make an appearance at the world premiere of Crossfire Hurricane - the latest attempt to chronicle their lengthy career on film.

The film, made by director Brett Morgen, will be screened in cinemas in October and then broadcast by BBC Two later in the year.

But it will not be the only rock-inspired film on show, with screenings of Spike Island - about a group of young musicians desperate to watch the Stone Roses' legendary gig at the Cheshire venue - and Good Vibrations - the biopic of Belfast punk pioneer Terri Hooley - also being shown.

There will be 225 films shown over 12 days between October 10 and 21 at the annual event, which opens with the European premiere of Tim Burton's 3D animation Frankenweenie.

Other films being shown include Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut Quartet, starring Dame Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly and Michael Gambon, and Ben Affleck's political thriller Argo.

The festival will close with Mike Newell's adaptation of the Charles Dickens tale Great Expectations.

There will also be a competitive element to the festival, with awards given for Best Film, Best First Feature and Best Documentary, and a £5,000 bursary for the Best British Newcomer.
