Sell-out Bestival gets under way

The last and one of the quirkiest major UK music festivals is getting into full swing as 50,000 revellers enjoy headline shows by Stevie Wonder, Florence and the Machine and New Order.

The Bestival music event on the Isle of Wight is made up of more than 20 stages with the line-up including sets by The xx, Friendly Fires, Two Door Cinema Club, Emeli Sande, Bat for Lashes, Orbital, Miike Snow and Azealia Banks.

The sell-out event at Robin Hill Country Park is to be the first UK festival to be streamed live on YouTube.

As well as the hundreds of acts taking to the stages, Bestival has become renowned for its Saturday fancy-dress parade which this year has been given the theme of wildlife.

Bestival curator and Radio 1 dj Rob da Bank said: "It's time to get wild, dress up, let your hair down, prepare to party like it's, well, 2012 and hopefully witness things that no-one else on earth has ever seen."

A traffic management plan has been put in place by police and the local council in a bid to avoid a repeat of the traffic chaos caused by heavy rains at the Isle of Wight Festival held in June.

Police will also be patrolling the site to provide reassurance to revellers as well as to check for illicit drugs as well as "legal highs" which are banned from the event as well as to prevent theft and other crimes.

Inspector Paul Savill said: "Most people coming to the Bestival want to enjoy the music and soak up the atmosphere, but some, unfortunately, have more sinister motives.

"We do everything we can to prevent people from becoming victims but it is inevitable that some crime will take place."

He added: "We treat the Bestival as though we were policing any other close-knit community with tried-and-tested neighbourhood-policing methods."
