Burke cancels too-popular concerts

Alexandra Burke has postponed her upcoming shows at London's Royal Albert Hall - because they are too popular.

The former X Factor winner was due to perform the soundtrack from the 1972 movie Lady Sings The Blues with a full live jazz band at the prestigious venue's Elgar Room as a musical tribute to Billie Holiday.

The 24-year-old has now decided to cancel the five gigs due to "overwhelming demand".

She explained on Twitter: "I wouldn't move these shows if I didn't have a reason. These shows will now be bigger and better. I can't wait to perform for you all! I love my beasties so much for understanding. Through thick and thin. I couldn't be more grateful and humbled by this."

The five-night residency from June 4 would have seen Alexandra take a jazzy new musical direction with the songs, which tell the story of Billie's life. The film starred Diana Ross.

"Due to an overwhelming demand for tickets, Alexandra Burke has decided to postpone her June Lady Sings The Blues concerts and re-schedule the performances for later this year, at additional venues," a statement read.

"Tickets for the six dates at the Royal Albert Hall's Elgar Room sold out within hours, with many fans disappointed, so these new dates, to be announced soon, will allow more fans to see and enjoy the shows."

Alexandra, who won the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008 ahead of runners-up JLS, is working on her third album, the follow-up to 2012's Heartbreak On Hold.
