NewsJuly, 2 Lady Gaga back on stage to singLady Gaga has performed for the first time since having hip surgery in February. The 27-year-old singer and gay rights campaigner gave a speech and sang America's National Anthem at a Gay Pride rally in her native New York City. Gaga was forced to cancel her world tour in February after being diagnosed with synovitis - a chronic condition which causes joints to swell. Following surgery she was left wheelchair-bound. But she was back on her feet at the event to help celebrate the latest breakthrough in gay marriage in America, after the Supreme Court declared last week that a key section of the Defence of Marriage Act, which restricts federal benefits for gay couples, is unconstitutional. Gaga - sporting a new blonde bob - clutched a rainbow flag and gave a rousing speech during the rally at Manhattan's Pier 26, telling the crowd: "We are not a niche. We are part, a big giant part of humanity. It's time for us to be mainstream. I demand the rights!" She then sang an a cappella version of The Star Spangled Banner, changing the last line to reflect the Gay Pride event, singing: "Oh say does that star spangled, flag of pride yet wave. For the land of the free and the home for the brave." The Born This Way singer used a gold plated wheelchair while recovering from surgery but was pictured strutting around in heels again in May.
