Hard Rock Calling axed for 2014

Long-standing music festival Hard Rock Calling, whose headliners have included Sir Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, has been axed for 2014.

The event - first established in 2006 - had been staged in London's Hyde Park but after promoters lost the contract for the area, it was moved this summer to the Olympic Park in east London.

The scrapping of Hard Rock Calling comes after events such as Leicester's Summer Sundae and Kent's Hop Farm Festival were also dropped in recent months.

This year's line-up included headline performances by Springsteen and Kasabian. Organisers were unable to say whether this year's change of venue had led to the cancellation of the 2014 event, or whether it would be revived at a later date.

A statement from organisers said: " Hard Rock International today announced that it will not stage its iconic open-air festival Hard Rock Calling in London in 2014.

"The brand has been privileged and honoured to host this world-class event in London - both at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Hyde Park for the last eight years.

"Hard Rock International looks forward to hosting new world-class music events, both in London and around the globe, and anticipates announcing major European music programmes shortly."

Performers at the event in previous years have included Sir Paul, Pearl Jam, Neil Young and Aerosmith.

Wireless Festival - which is staged by the same promoter Live Nation - also moved to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park this year.

Hyde Park was this year the venue for a new event, the British Summer Time concert series, which included two performances by the Rolling Stones.
