Cowell stars bid for Christmas No 1

The winner of this year's X Factor will take on another product of Simon Cowell's star-making machine in the race for this year's Christmas number one.

The single by the eventual winner of the ITV show will be released digitally on the night of the final on Sunday December 15 and be in stores three days later.

All the proceeds from the song will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and Together for Short Lives - which helps terminally ill children.

Cowell said: "Both Together for Short Lives and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity are really important charities. Every day they do inspiring work and help a load of kids and their families, all of which need their expertise and support.

"I have been lucky enough to see first-hand the great work that both of these charities do and I am thrilled that we can do something to help by donating the sales of The X Factor winner's single to them both. Thank you in advance to everyone who will help."

The song is up against another charity single with a Cowell connection after Susan Boyle recorded a duet of O Come, All Ye Faithful with Elvis Presley in aid of Save The Children.

Boyle shot to fame after appearing on Britain's Got Talent.

Other contenders include Lily Allen's cover version of Keane's Somewhere Only We Know from the John Lewis advert and a version of Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by the cast of ITV2's show The Big Reunion.

Also in the running is 11-year-old choirboy Jack Topping who has released a version of Tomorrow from the Annie soundtrack.

The X Factor single lost out last year when James Arthur was kept off the top spot in Christmas week by the Hillsborough charity single - a cover of He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.
