'Best start' for Taylor Swift gigs

Taylor Swift felt like she had the "best possible start" as she kicked off the first of her five London shows on the UK leg of her Red tour.

Opening her debut at her sold-out 2014 residency at London's 02 Arena, the Nashville songstress - dressed in high-waisted black shorts, white shirt and red lipstick - launched into State Of Grace, Holy Ground and Red, all from her recent album Red.

Taylor, known for her high-profile relationships with heart-throbs such as Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Mayer, said: "Red is the colour of anger, love and jealousy, and I have found those very fun subjects to write about."

The 24-year-old singer introduced her "best friend" Ed Sheeran with the "voice of an angel". They duetted on his song Lego House before taking to the stage for their hit Everything Has Changed.

Taylor enjoyed various costume changes, wearing a plunging red dress, followed by a sparkling Union Jack T-shirt and an elegant floor-length white gown for fan favourite Love Story.

For I Knew You Were Trouble, she appeared in a white floor-length, full-skirted dress, which ripped away to reveal a tight lace playsuit as the song progressed.

Taylor demonstrated her musical talents by switching between playing a sparkly red electric guitar, acoustic guitar and banjo.

For All Too Well she head-banged along as she played the piano, visibly welling up as she admitted: "Sometimes the hardest thing is forgetting the good times you had with someone. I wrote this to help me move on."

Each track was accompanied by dramatic stage sets and on several occasions the singer was hoisted into the air on a platform as she sang.

Taylor ended her show with a breathtaking finale, performing her huge hit We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, dressed in a top hat and ring-master's jacket, as fireworks exploded and streamers fell into the crowd.

"This is the best possible start to my five nights in London I could have imagined," she said.

Her UK tour continues at the O2 tonight, before she returns on February 4, 10 and 11.
