1D fans injured at Peru concert

One Direction appealed for calm as fans got hurt during the band's latest performance in Peru.

Around 47 concert-goers were treated for asphyxia during the packed gig at Estadio Nacional stadium in Lima, after they were crushed as they tried to get to the front.

Tents were used as emergency treatment centres and an emergency evacuation plan was put in place, following the incident on April 26, reported the Daily Mirror.

The group pleaded for fans to calm down before they stopped performing, and warned the surging crowd they would walk off the stage. Footage showed Niall Horan saying: "If you don't want anyone to take us off the stage, make sure you stay back."

His bandmate Liam Payne added: "Or we'll have to go - and we don't want to go."

Mario Cassareto, head of Peru's volunteer fire service, told Peruvian radio: "We treated 47 children aged 12 to 15 for the first stages of asphyxia. Everything is under control. We have nothing to be ashamed of, we've handled the situation well. "

Chief of police General Salvador Iglesias said there was a rush as youngsters scrambled to get to the front when the concert doors opened.

One Direction - Niall, Liam, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - played a set consisting of 19 songs and four encores at the South American gig, which was the second of 69 shows in their Where We Are world tour.

The band's spokesman said: "Audience safety is always the number one priority on a One Direction tour.

"The band's management employ, in their touring party, the very best crowd control and advance security specialists who plan in advance and on the day with all the relevant local experts and services including police, fire, medical, the venue and the promoter," he added.
