Robot to join McCartney on stage

Sir Paul McCartney has teamed up with the team behind War Horse who have created a robot for his latest video and live shows.

The giant puppet, called Newman, appears alongside the musician in the Night At The Museum-style promo for new single Appreciate which was shown for the first time today.

The 71-year-old star had initially come up with the idea for a towering robotic figure for the album cover for his most recent release New last year, but it eventually ended up in the video.

In the film, Newman is on patrol in a futuristic museum in which humans are on display and he sees Sir Paul in one of the cases. The pair go on to walk around the gallery and the other exhibits come to life.

The former Beatle said: "I woke up one morning with an image in my head of me standing with a large robot. I thought it might be something that could be used for the cover of my album New, but instead the idea turned out to be for my music video for Appreciate. Together with the people who had done the puppetry for the worldwide hit War Horse we developed the robot who became Newman."

The character will also feature on stage as Sir Paul plays in Japan over the coming days.
