Taylor Swift reveals identity of mystery co-writer 'William Bowery'

Taylor Swift has revealed the identity of a mystery writer on her latest album - her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn.

Released in July, Folklore came as a surprise to fans after being recorded in isolation at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an Instagram post explaining why she was releasing the album at the time, Swift thanked someone named "William Bowery" - leading to much speculation from fans about his identity as he did not appear to be a registered songwriter or producer.

Now, the 30-year-old has revealed that Bowery is in fact her British boyfriend, who co-wrote two of the songs.

Swift cleared up the mystery during Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions on Disney+, performing and talking about the stories and secrets behind all of the album's 16 tracks.

"There's been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity because it's not a real person," she said. "That would have gone on forever...

"William Bowery is Joe as we know and Joe plays piano beautifully and he's always just playing and making things up and kind of creating things and (the song) Exile was crazy because Joe had written that entire piano part and it was, singing the Bon Iver part, 'I can see you standing honey...'

"He was just singing it the way that the whole first verse is and so I was entranced and asked if we could keep writing that one.

"It was pretty obvious that it should be a duet because he's got such a low voice and it sounded really good sung down there."

Swift and Alwyn have largely kept their relationship out of the public eye.

However, in the US star's 2019 track London Boy, she sings about her adventures in the capital having fallen for a London boy, referring to locations such as Hackney, Brixton and Bond Street.

"Darling, I fancy you," she sings, detailing meeting her boyfriend's best mates in Highgate, watching rugby in the pub, grey skies and rainy cab rides, and loving "high tea, stories from uni, and the West End".

Swift is currently re-recording her back catalogue amid a high-profile row over the master recordings, after music mogul Scooter Braun bought the record label she was previously signed to.
