Sophie Ellis-Bextor signs up for fundraising 24-hour Kitchen Disco Danceathon

Sophie Ellis-Bextor signs up for fundraising 24-hour Kitchen Disco Danceathon

Sophie Ellis-Bextor will attempt to do her Kitchen Disco for 24 hours to raise money for Children in Need.

The Murder on the Dancefloor singer created her Kitchen Disco video series, in which she sings and dances under a glitter ball in her kitchen at home, often surrounded by her children, to lift people's spirits during the lockdown of 2020, and it became a huge sensation, with her even hosting Kitchen Disco mixes on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

And now, she has agreed to do it for a full 24 hours as part of Radio 2's BBC Children in Need Challenge.

"I love to dance, I love to Kitchen Disco, but can I keep going for a whole 24 hours?" she said in a statement on Monday. "I'm sure I can for BBC Children In Need... with the support of Radio 2's fantastic listeners!"

During her Kitchen Disco Danceathon, which begins on 16 November, the Take Me Home star will be joined by a host of celebrity guests and Radio 2 presenters - both virtually and in-person in the BBC Radio Theatre - to help give her support.

The 42-year-old follows in the footsteps of fitness coach Joe Wicks, who did 24 hours of continuous PE for last year's challenge and Rylan Clark's Ka-Ry-Oke Challenge in 2019.

Sharing the news of her danceathon on Twitter, Ellis-Bextor wrote, "The cat's out the bag!! I am taking on the baton from @thebodycoach (Joe Wicks) & doing a 24-hour #R2KitchenDisco for @BBCCiN!! Starting 9.30 next Tuesday 16th with @BBCRadio2. Please support me however you can! It's going to be fun, intense and I'll end up a little deranged I expect."

Children in Need 2021 takes place on 19 November.
