Bobby Brown claims Britney Spears 'butchered' cover of My Prerogative

Bobby Brown isn't a fan of Britney Spears's cover of his classic song, My Prerogative.

The R&B singer included the single on his 1988 album Don't Be Cruel, with the track going on to be covered or sampled by many artists over the years.

But during an interview for Club Shay Shay on Wednesday, Brown admitted to host Shannon Sharpe that he didn't like Spears's rendition, which featured on her 2004 compilation, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative.

"I don't think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs," he fired. "Britney Spears butchered (My) Prerogative. Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that I couldn't take it. I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears and I was thinking (she would do a good job). Teddy Riley is doing it too, so you know, but I felt it was a butchering."

Despite Brown mentioning record producer Riley in the conversation, Swedish production duo Bloodshy & Avant actually oversaw Spears's version. Riley produced the original and is credited as a songwriter on both Brown's and Spears's versions of the track.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Brown noted that he always requests to hear a cover of one of his songs before allowing it to be recorded.

"Yes, I gotta hear it," the 56-year-old continued. "Because you don't know what these kids will say these days. These kids will say some s**t that you don't want your song associated with."

Representatives for Spears have not yet responded to Brown's criticism.
