FKA Twigs opens up about overcoming 'brutal and violent' moments in her life

FKA Twigs has spoken candidly about overcoming what she described as "brutal and violent" moments in her life.

Months after settling her domestic abuse lawsuit against her former boyfriend, actor Shia LaBeouf, the British singer-songwriter and dancer has opened up about a difficult chapter in her life.

Twigs, real name Tahliah Barnett, settled the lawsuit in July four years after filing, requesting to dismiss the case "with prejudice," meaning the claims cannot be refiled at a later date.

In a new interview with Elle, the 37-year-old reflected on a difficult time in her life and how it has shaped her perspective.

"I'm reaching that age where I can really look back at my life and I can see so many things that have been beautiful and amazing, and other things that have been really brutal and violent," she said. "I'm realising that I can hold my love of life and my artistry and the beauty of my life, and I can also hold the brutality and the sadness and the violence."

The 37-year-old added, "I can hold things at the same time, and that feels really good."

The singer filed the lawsuit in December 2020, seeking $10 million (£7 million) in damages for alleged sexual battery, assault and emotional distress during the year-long relationship.

In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the singer admitted that she still doesn't "feel safe" following the lawsuit dismissal.

"I wouldn't say I feel safe," she stated. "I feel really passionate about being involved with organisations such as Sistah Space and No More, to help survivors in any way that I can."

Twigs and LaBeouf were in a relationship from 2018 to 2019.
