Prince's estate to release album of 'rare' recordings

Executors of the late Prince's estate are to release an album of previously unheard songs.

The Purple Rain star, born Prince Rogers Nelson, died at the age of 57 of an accidental fentanyl overdose in April 2016.

To coincide with the Prince Celebration 2026 festival held at his Paisley Park home and at locations across Minneapolis, Minnesota this weekend, estate representatives announced on Thursday that an album titled Timeless will drop on 28 August.

"Timeless traces Prince's remarkable artistic evolution across nearly four decades, from his earliest studio recordings as a teenage prodigy in Minneapolis to one of his final recorded performances," they said in a statement.

One song, 1995's Stone, is now available to stream.

The other nine tracks, which span from 1977 until 2016, include 1991's With This Tear and 2007's The Guilty Ones.

"The collection showcases the extraordinary consistency, curiosity and creative ambition that defined his work throughout his life, offering fans a rare opportunity to hear previously unheard chapters of his creative journey," they continued.

The Prince Celebration 2026 runs until Sunday, with guests including Chaka Khan and Miguel.

A free block party will also be held in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, with a choir to lead the spectacle.

"For the first time ever, downtown Minneapolis becomes a living tribute to Prince Rogers Nelson - where thousands come together, voices united, to celebrate the music and spirit that continues to define a city. This is more than a sing-along. This is a moment," a press release reads.
