Stars step out in LA for BMI awards

Benji and Joel Madden joined other singers and songwriters as they attended the BMI Pop Awards in Los Angeles.

The musical brothers, who front rock band Good Charlotte, walked the red carpet at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel alongside icons like Chaka Khan, and songwriters Jay Sean, Alex Da Kid and Jason Derulo.

"I love being at these events, I love it especially being with songwriters and other creative people. I love being in a room with other creative people, it inspires me," Joel said.

Canadian songwriter David Foster, who is noted for discovering stars like Michael Buble, Celine Dion and Josh Groban, was honoured with the BMI Icon gong. He joins the likes of the Jacksons, the Bee Gees, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton.

"It's nice to be the man of the evening, rather than one of hundreds. It puts a nice dot on your career," he said.

"Hopefully it doesn't mean that it's over because I have a lot more to do. I've been coming here for over 25 years and it's really a night for songwriters. Songwriters really are the unsung heroes - no pun intended - and like scriptwriters, there would be no music without the song. Rightfully so, the artists get the lion's share of the attention, but tonight it's all about the songwriters."

Lady Gaga, Jason Derulo and JR Rotem were named Pop Songwriters of the Year, while Lady Antebellum's crossover smash Need You Now scooped Pop Song of the Year by the Broadcast Music Inc (BMI).
