Wildhearts guitar in Japan auction

British rock star Ginger is to auction off his prized guitar to raise money for Japan's tsunami fund.

Ginger, lead singer of cult British band The Wildhearts, has enjoyed success in the Far East over the past 20 years, regularly performing to sell-out crowds in Tokyo and Osaka.

The flame-haired singer-songwriter, whose hits include I Wanna Go Where The People Go, has decided to put his iconic and heavily-stickered Gibson Les Paul electric guitar under the hammer with all proceeds going to the British Red Cross.

Ginger, originally from South Shields, said: "I bought this guitar around 1987 when I was asked to join New York rockers The Throbs. After a short term in NYC, the guitar came back to England with me to form The Wildhearts.

"I recorded every Wildhearts album with this guitar. It acted as my main guitar on every tour The Wildhearts ever did - including the AC/DC Ballbreaker tour, as well as appearances with Sex Pistols, Manic Street Preachers and many more.

"Basically, if you ever saw The Wildhearts I was playing this guitar and if you ever heard The Wildhearts then you were listening to this guitar.

"All money received from the sale of this guitar will be donated to the British Red Cross."

He added: "The money from the guitar will mean more to some than the memories mean to me. Often we have to give things away to get things in life, and in this case I'll be receiving the gift of helping someone less fortunate than myself."

The death toll in Japan's March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami stands at around 15,000 - with more than 8,000 still missing and 100,000 in temporary accommodation shelters.

Ginger's guitar is being auctioned via eBay.
