'Lost' Queen footage saved by comic

Rock band Queen have revealed that footage of a long-lost performance is to be screened thanks to late comic Dick Emery - after he accidentally taped it.

Archive performances and previously unseen film of the group will feature in a BBC Two documentary this weekend.

And among them will be scenes from a 1970s performance on BBC One's Top Of The Pops which was thought to have disappeared for good.

However it turned up among the possessions of funnyman Dick, who was one of the biggest light entertainment stars of the '60s and '70s.

The comic - who specialised in character sketches - was best known for his catchphrase as predatory Mandy, "Ooh, you are awful... but I like you", and died in 1983 at the age of 67.

The recovered footage will be screened in the documentary Queen: Days Of Our Lives, to be shown on Sunday night.

The chart legends - whose hits included Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions and Another One Bites The Dust - revealed the Emery link in an interview with BBC One's Breakfast this morning.

Guitarist Brian May said the material had come from numerous sources.

"A lot of it was discovered in strange places because in those days of course not a lot of people had domestic video recorders but occasionally things were captured by accident," he said. "Dick Emery actually captured one of our performances on Top Of The Pops which the BBC had wiped or lost, I don't know.

"And it's only a couple of months ago that this was found in somebody's collection. So suddenly we have this lost performance."
