No US X Factor return for Cheryl

American TV bosses have confirmed there is no chance of a return to the judging panel on the US X Factor for Cheryl Cole.

The star was dropped from the show last month but it had been reported that Simon Cowell was in talks in a bid to bring her back.

A statement released on behalf of the show's makers Fox, Fremantle Media North America and Syco TV confirmed Cheryl will be replaced by former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger.

It went on: "Nicole will join Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul on their search across America to find the next global superstar or group to win the life-changing five million dollar recording deal. Nicole has previously joined Simon Cowell as a guest judge on The X Factor for the UK version of the show in 2010. Steve Jones will act as sole host of The X Factor."

The first reports linking Cheryl to a role on the US show surfaced last year but were not confirmed until May 5 this year, when Simon announced she had got the job.

Only three weeks later it was reported she had been dramatically dropped from the show, leading to feverish press speculation about her next career move and the state of her relationship with Simon.

Some reports linked the Newcastle-born star with a judging role on a new BBC talent show, but publicist Max Clifford told Sky News on Sunday Cheryl would be a judge on American X Factor if Simon "has his way".

Mr Clifford said he had spoken to Simon, who told him: "I want Cheryl Cole on the show."

Some commentators have suggested the uncertainty of the judging situation was deliberately engineered by Simon to increase publicity for the show, but Mr Clifford rubbished those claims.
