Mitch: I fought to get Amy clean

Amy Winehouse's father Mitch has revealed the fight to get her off drugs often turned physical, as he tussled with the dealers and gangsters who were supplying his daughter.

Amy, who fought a long battle with drink and drugs, was found dead at her flat in north London on July 23. The late singer's family have launched a charity foundation to mark what would have been the troubled Back To Black star's 28th birthday.

Former taxi driver Mitch said: "I spent my time fighting with drug dealers, and I mean proper fighting. And I'm a middle-aged man, who is overweight, having fistfights with people."

Toxicology results showed there were no illegal substances in Amy's system when she died. Her family believe her death may have been related to a seizure caused by periods of drinking and detoxing.

Mitch said his daughter had finally decided to change her ways once she saw how hurt her family was.

"She witnessed all this stuff going on, of how her family and her friends were fighting gangsters and she decided she didn't want to put her family in that position anymore," he added.

Mitch told of negative influences in the group that surrounded Amy and admitted he was naive about her drug use early on.

But he said of his daughter's final relationship with film director Reg Traviss: "I don't know what her ultimate plans were, but she was certainly talking to me about having children. Even when she was drinking, she was in a great place."

Donations to the new charity can be made at www.amywinehousefoundation.co.uk.
