Young records God Save The Queen

Neil Young has recorded a version of God Save The Queen for his new album.

The veteran Canadian rocker's version of the national anthem is the final track on Americana and also includes lyrics from the patriotic US song My Country 'Tis Of Thee which is traditionally sung to the same tune.

Young said God Save The Queen "may have been sung in North America before the American Revolution and Declaration of Independence in 1776, which rejected British sovereignty".

The singer-songwriter said his new arrangement, which changes some of the lyrics and melody, was "in recognition of the war of independence and America's transition to freedom".

The album, which will be released in June, also features versions of American folk songs including Oh Susannah and This Land Is Your Land, and sees Young reunited with his backing band Crazy Horse.

Young, who found fame in the 1960s with Buffalo Springfield, has released dozens of albums in a solo career which has seen him veer from a folky singer-songwriter style to hard rock.
