NewsMarch, 15 Lauper: Fantastic working on showCyndi Lauper has said penning a Broadway musical has made her a better songwriter. The Girls Just Want To Have Fun singer has written the music and lyrics for the show Kinky Boots - based on the 2005 British film about a shoe factory that is struggling following the death of its founder until it finds new life in fetish footwear - and it opens in New York next month. Cyndi said: "I found it fantastic and I think I'm a better songwriter for it, too." The star admitted she has felt nervous, as well as humble, as she watches previews of the project. "It's the closest thing to being five," she said. The musical version has a reworked story by Harvey Fierstein. It is directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, with music supervised by Stephen Oremus. All three are Tony Award winners. Cyndi said: "I keep telling myself how lucky am I that the first thing I do on Broadway has Harvey and Jerry and Stephen Oremus - everyone a Tony winner. C'mon, that's awesome!" Cyndi has tried several different music styles during her lengthy career and revealed that all the experimentation helped when she was asked to write different styles for different characters in Kinky Boots. But the star also insisted she just followed orders. "I like to make people laugh. I like to make people think and cry. I like the characters to have depth and Harvey writes them with depth," she said. "I don't know what I'm doing. I just follow what they wanted." The singer explained that songs just come to her, whether she's at the gym or in bed. When they do, she reaches for her iPhone and sings into a recorder. "Sometimes they come in an idea, sometimes they come in a song, sometimes you wake up in the middle of the night," she said.
