1D fans to star in new documentary

One Direction's diehard fans are to be the subject of a new Channel 4 documentary.

The programme - I Heart One Direction - will look at the passionate army of young and old fans who get close to the group using social media websites.

The hour-long film, made by director Daisy Asquith is to be screened in the summer as part of the Cutting Edge series.

The group - Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - have amassed more than 10 million followers on Twitter and the programme will look at how the fans use the internet to access their idols.

Channel 4 said: " It will get under the skin of this new 21st century style of young fans to find out what it means to be a true 'Directioner'."

Tayte Simpson, executive producer at production company Mentorn Media said: "It will offer a fascinating insight into a new breed of idol worship. Social media has created huge communities which connect millions of fans in a way that was never possible before."
