Avicii hit claims number one spot

Swedish DJ and producer Avicii has scored the fastest-selling single of the year which went straight in at number one on Sunday, the Official Charts Company said.

Wake Me Up sold nearly 267,000 copies this week - its first week on sale - which beats the previous record set by Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines in May by around 76,000.

It is also the biggest single-week sale since The Justice Collective's cover of The Hollies' He Ain't Heavy claimed the 2012 Christmas number one with sales of more than 269,000.

Avicii, also known as Tim Bergling, scored his first number one single in the UK in February with I Could Be The One with Dutch DJ Nicky Romero.

The 23-year-old had two other top five hits in 2011 - Collide with Leona Lewis and Levels, which was later sampled by Flo Rida for his 2012 number one hit Good Feeling.

Wake Me Up pushed Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines featuring TI and Pharrell Williams down to number two, while John Newman's Love Me Again is at three, Icona Pop's I Love It featuring Charli XCX is at four, and Will.I.Am's Bang Bang is at number five.

Robin Thicke ended Jay-Z's one-week stand at number one on the Official Albums Chart.

The US R&B star's sixth studio album Blurred Lines has relegated Beyonce's husband's Magna Carta Holy Grail into second place.

Blurred Lines is Thicke's second UK top 40 album, with his 2007 second album The Evolution Of Robin Thicke peaking at number 30 six years ago this month.

The album's lead single and title track broke through the million copies sales barrier earlier this week.
