Unknown tipped for Eurovision tilt

Virtual unknown Molly Smitten-Downes is being tipped as the UK's entry for Eurovision as the BBC ditches its recent strategy of enlisting veteran stars for the annual music bash.

Her name has been circulating online and her Wikipedia entry has been amended, claiming she has been chosen for the event in Copenhagen, Denmark, and performing a track called Children Of The Universe.

An announcement will be made officially this evening on the BBC's Red Button service.

BBC bosses will be hoping to fare better than recent years with last year's entry Bonnie Tyler finishing in a lowly 19th position. A year earlier Engelbert Humperdinck's place was even more disastrous when he came 25th out of a field of 26.

This year opted to find a undiscovered name through BBC Introducing, which the corporation uses to give an outlet for up and coming talents.

Molly became linked to the contest - which is staged on May 10 - when she was named repeatedly on social media outlets.

The BBC's executive producer for Eurovision, Guy Freeman, had outlined the need to go back to basics in an effort to improve the UK showing.

In a blog he said: "We took the view that we needed a bespoke, contemporary song, written specifically to suit the conditions of the competition - rather than trying to get lucky with a pre-existing track from an artist."
