Muse to start work on album in May

Muse have revealed that they plan to start work on their next album in May.

The trio, fronted by Matt Bellamy, said they will begin the follow-up to their sixth album The 2nd Law in coming weeks.

Drummer Dom Howard told KROQ: "We're going to start this year... We're going to go back in May and start working on some new stuff, so I think we'll start making it this year.

"If we can get something out this year, that would be great, but definitely next year," he added.

Dom also discussed how Nirvana were a big inspiration for the rockers. They covered the band's song Lithium during their headline set at the Coachella music festival in California.

"They were massively influential to us when we were growing up. They're one of the reasons we picked up some instruments and decided to start a band in the first place, and I think that for many other millions of people, they were influential for starting bands," he said.

"We all love them - it was a band that all three of us loved and it was that kind of music and some other bands that brought us together and we became friends because of that," he added.

Matt, who is engaged to actress Kate Hudson, previously revealed that a few songs have already been written for the upcoming album.

"I've written some good tracks, actually. We haven't had a chance to rehearse them out yet," he said, adding: "I have this strong feeling that the next album should be something that really does strip away the additional things that we've experimented with on the last two albums, which is electronics, symphonics and orchestral work and all that kind of stuff."
