NewsSeptember, 10 Nirvana to Receive Video Vanguard Award at 2026 VMAs
Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, producers confirmed on Wednesday. The rock band – Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl – will be celebrated at the ceremony, set for the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on 27 September. An MTV spokesperson marked the news on Instagram by recalling that the group first played the VMAs stage on the same date in 1992, writing that they shaped music, culture and MTV forever and naming them the 2026 recipient. The spokesperson said the event will honour "Nirvana's incredible legacy," though no further details were shared. Among the band's best-known videos are Smells Like Teen Spirit and In Bloom, both from 1991, and 1993's Heart-Shaped Box. It remains unknown whether Novoselic or Grohl will attend. Representatives for the two have not commented. Cobain died by suicide in 1994 at 27. He is survived by his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, 34. The prize, sometimes called the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, has gone to artists including Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna and U2. Madonna tops the 2026 nominations with 11, ahead of Taylor Swift with nine and Ariana and Sabrina Carpenter with seven each. No host has been announced yet.
