Carmen Bryan Sues N.O.R.E. Over 1999 Assault

Carmen Bryan has filed a lawsuit accusing rapper N.O.R.E. of sexual assault. The incident allegedly took place at a crowded nightclub in Manhattan in May 1999, according to legal documents obtained by Rolling Stone.

In the complaint, Bryan, an author and entrepreneur, says that the hip-hop culture of the 1990s was marked by "pervasive sexism, sexual objectification and misogynoir," which she claims kept her silent for over two decades. She alleges that N.O.R.E., whose real name is Victor Santiago, approached her while visibly intoxicated and committed an act of nonconsensual digital penetration, all in the presence of her friends.

After Bryan fled the club, Santiago followed her outside. It was then that he recognized her as the partner of fellow rapper Nas and immediately apologized, reportedly saying, "Carm, I didn't know it was you. You're always doing something different with your hair."

Bryan says she later told Jay-Z about the assault, a trusted confidant with whom she had a secret on-and-off relationship for years. She decided to take legal action after reading the domestic violence and sex trafficking lawsuit that Casandra Ventura brought against Sean 'Diddy' Combs in November 2023.

Bryan dated Nas during the 1990s, and they share a daughter, Destiny Jones, born in 1994. She is also the author of the 2006 memoir It's No Secret, which detailed her experiences in the hip-hop world.
