Coldplay closes Big Weekend's day 1

Coldplay has brought the first day of BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend to a close.

Thousands of fans packed Glasgow Green for a day of music which saw other big acts performing, including One Direction, Calvin Harris and Lily Allen.

The boy band were greeted to the sound of thousands of screaming fans as they kick-started the party, performing many of their hits, including What Makes You Beautiful, Midnight Memories and Little Things.

Up to 50,000 revellers are attending the event over two days, with crowds back at the site again today to watch performances from Paolo Nutini and Katy Perry.

The Firework singer will close the festival which will also see Kings of Leon, The Vamps, John Newman, Rita Ora, The 1975 and Tinie Tempah taking to the main stage.

The line-up on the other stage includes Kasabian, London Grammar, Sam Smith and Klaxons.

Pharrell, Bastille, Jake Bugg, and Ed Sheeran are among the other big names who have already performed

Example, Lorde and Twin Atlantic also entertained the crowds today on the In New Music We Trust stage.

Jake Bugg said: "It feels good, it feels nice to have the opportunity to come here and play alongside the other acts playing here today, you know, and it's great for the fans as well"

"It's always been great, I've always had a good gig playing here and the crowd get into it and are really appreciative, so it makes a really big difference."

Twin Atlantic's Sam McTrusty said: "We've waited a few years to play this festival and now we're getting to do it and it was like two miles from where I live, so there was nearly zero effort involved in getting here.

"I sometimes just feel that being a home town crowd helps bring that little bit extra out in you, but the fact that my home town is Glasgow and has the craziest crowd I've ever played to, just means it's another level.

"It's meant to be summer out there, but it feels like November or something, so you have to have a good sense of humour to be from here."
