Foo Fighters announce they will play at Glastonbury 2015

The American rock band reveal they will play at Worthy Farm this summer after being named best international band at the NME Awards

Foo Fighters have announced they will perform at Glastonbury this summer after they were named best international band at the NME Awards on Wednesday night.

In a recorded video message, lead singer Dave Grohl told the audience at Brixton Academy in south London they were returning to the UK to play Glastonbury - the first major act announced for this year's event.

The US rock band will headline the Pyramid Stage on Friday, Glastonbury confirmed on their website, making their first appearance at the Somerset festival since 1998.

Tickets for the event have been sold out since October, but

a re-sale is planned in April for any cancelled and returned tickets.

Organiser Emily Eavis said: "We feel incredibly lucky to have confirmed the Foo Fighters for the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury this year.

"Very few bands have the power to unite and energise a crowd like Foo Fighters do. We can't wait for them to rock Worthy Farm on Friday night."

The confirmation comes after bookmakers Paddy Power backed the Foo Fighters to top the bill along with Coldplay, Prince and Queen.

Last year, Grohl told NME that the Foo Fighters were "overdue" a Glastonbury slot after last performing there in 1998.

"It's an iconic festival," he said. "I just tell everyone if they need a band, we're pretty good. They should give us a call. See what happens."
