NewsAugust, 21 Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer Faces Two Surgeries
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris is set to undergo two surgeries after a medical emergency earlier this month. The 58-year-old musician was placed in an induced coma after falling ill before the band's concert in San Francisco, California, on 6 August. According to a representative for bandmate Verdine White, Paris has woken from the coma but faces a lengthy recovery. The spokesperson noted that the journey has had both positive moments and fresh hurdles, emphasizing that recovery is not a straight path. Paris briefly regained consciousness earlier but had to be sedated again. Recently, he woke up once more, showing encouraging progress. Doctors have been monitoring him closely, and his blood pressure and breathing have remained stable. After further tests, his medical team determined that he needs two major surgeries and will stay in the intensive care unit. His wife, Kathy Merrick, described the ordeal as a marathon, saying that Paris is fighting daily and that each step forward brings renewed hope. A GoFundMe campaign launched by a friend has raised over $82,000 (£60,000) to support the family. The band's show with Lionel Richie was postponed at the last minute due to the emergency. The identity of the affected member was not revealed until a week later, when friends posted an update on Facebook.
