Jackson tribute gig divides family

Michael Jackson's mother has promised fans a tribute concert held in the star's honour will be "a show fit for a king".

Katherine Jackson told reporters she felt the concert, which will be held in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in October, was shaping up to be a "world class event".

She said: "After I was told the name of some of the world famous artists that would perform I knew it would be a show fit for a king, and so if my son was here today he would feel the same way."

The 81-year-old Jackson matriarch appeared alongside children La Toya, Tito, Marlon and Jackie at a press conference to announce the concert.

La Toya paid tribute to her brother, who died two years ago: "Michael was a person who had a wonderful heart and he loved life, he loved people and he loved giving," she said.

The concert is set to benefit a number of charities supported by Michael, including Aids Project Los Angeles.

But while the singer's mother Katherine and four of his siblings have lent their support to the show, brothers Jermaine and Randy have branded the event "ill-timed", as it falls two weeks into the criminal trial of Conrad Murray, the doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter in relation to the star's death.

The brothers said: "Today's press conference in Los Angeles announced a tribute concert to Michael to be attended and supported by the Jackson family. However, we want to make clear that this does not reflect the position of the entire family.

"While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honours our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death."
