Wilson joins War Of The Worlds cast

Kaiser Chiefs star Ricky Wilson is to join the stage show of War Of The Worlds.

The singer will join the cast of the touring musical as The Artilleryman, a role made famous on the original album by David Essex.

West End star Kerry Ellis is also joining the show - The War Of The Worlds: The New Generation - which will visit UK arenas later this year.

It is based on the hit album created by Jeff Wayne in the late 1970s and later adapted for the stage.

It will be the first stage role for Ricky beyond his band, whose hits include I Predict A Riot and Ruby. By coincidence they released a single called Man On Mars last year.

Kerry has starred in We Will Rock You and Wicked, as well as releasing an album with Queen guitarist Brian May. Liam Neeson will take the narrator role originally created by the late Richard Burton. Neeson will appear as a 3D hologram in the show, based on HG Wells' story about an invasion from Mars led by "Tripods".

Kerry said: "Growing up I remember listening to the iconic soundtrack on cassette and loving the musical story. Now I get the chance to play Beth and be part of the newly adapted show which is a dream."

Further members of the cast will be announced in coming weeks.

Composer Wayne praised the new additions to the cast. He said: "Over the years, I've been so fortunate to have had the participation of some truly great artists. I welcome them both to The War Of The Worlds."

The tour opens in Dublin on November 29, before moving on to 15 dates in England, Scotland and Wales.
