Calvin Harris is top of the DJs

Calvin Harris has been named the world's top music-maker, ahead of fellow DJs Tiesto and David Guetta.

The Grammy-winning Scottish producer and DJ, who won the Ivor Novello award for songwriter of the year, has come a long way from bagging groceries at a Dumfries supermarket after spinning his way to the top of the list of electronic cash kings, according to Forbes.com.

The 29-year-old - who has enjoyed a record-breaking stint in the top 10 with nine singles from his third album 18 Months - banked around 46 million US dollars (£29.5 million) in the past 12 months after signing a deal to play more than 70 shows over a two-year stint at Hakkasan nightclub in Las Vegas.

Calvin, who is dating fellow chart star Rita Ora, also made money by writing and producing hits for Rihanna and Florence Welch, and performed at the 2013 Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix.

"The rise of dance music has been astronomical in the last three years. I happened to be in the right place at the right time," he told Forbes.

Dutch DJ Tiesto (Tijs Michiel Verwest) took second place after earning around 32 million US dollars (£20.5 million) for his Hakkasan residency, while French producer David Guetta came third with an estimated salary of 30 million US dollars (£19.3 million) for his collaborations and live shows.

Disbanded group Swedish House Mafia - Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello - are in fourth place after earning around 25 million US dollars (£16 million), with Canadian star Deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman) rounding out the top five, with estimated earnings of 21 million US dollars (£13.5 million).

Avicii (Tim Bergling), Nick 'Afrojack' van de Wall, Armin van Buuren, Skillrex - tied in ninth place with Kaskade - and Steve Aoki finish the top 10.
