Katy Perry scores fourth number one

Pop princess Katy Perry has roared to the top of the charts with her latest single.

The American singer scores her fourth UK number one with power pop record Roar after selling a massive 179,500 copies in the last seven days, the Official Charts Company said.

Roar is now the UK's third fastest selling single of the year so far.

After being told by Radio 1's Official Chart host Jameela Jamil about her latest success, Perry told listeners: "I love the UK!

"The UK is one of the most important groups of people in the world for me because I feel like the UK is so ahead of the zeitgeist... They are the zeitgeist! I love going over there, and I'm going to be going over several times this year.

"The UK is where a lot of music trends start. It's where some of the coolest music comes out of, music that's influenced me. I'm listening to AlunaGeorge at the moment, and all that great stuff that you guys have been listening to for the last eight months by the way!"

Perry ended Ellie Goulding's scorching three-week reign at the top of the singles chart with Burn, which slid into second place, while Avicii's Wake Me Up, Klangkarussell's Sonnentanz (Sun Don't Shine) FT Will Heard and the Cedric Gervais remix of Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness completed the top five.

The original Sugababes line-up of Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchana failed to make the top 40 with their come-back single Flatline.

The trio, who formed in the late 90s before going their separate ways, released the tune on Friday, meaning that it only had 48 hours on sale ahead of the chart round-up. It debuted at number 50, narrowly missing out on a top 40 placing by just 1,000 copies.
