Elton: New songs spark rush to loo

Sir Elton John has revealed when he tries to play new songs at his concerts it sends all his fans off to the toilet.

The 66-year-old singer - who has just released The Diving Board, his first album in seven years - admitted his frustration at fans' reluctance to accept new material.

Elton revealed w hen he tries to play a new song in a big arena, it's "usually met by a mass exodus to the toilet".

"Of course, it's frustrating," he said. "You want people to like the new stuff as well as the old stuff."

The Rocket Man star revealed he plans to try some of the new songs at upcoming European shows to see which ones click with the audience, in the hope that two or three of them can be included in the set when he plays the United States later this autumn.

But Elton also revealed that with such a successful career behind him, he feels a liberation at not being pressured to create more hits.

"I'm not going to get played on the radio," he said. "I'm not a chart artist any more and that's fine. It gives me the chance to do what I want to do."
