NewsOctober, 4 1D and Little Mix to hit Radio 3One Direction and Little Mix are to become unlikely additions to the Radio 3 playlist after the station commissioned orchestral versions of their hits. The station has assembed male and female ensembles who have recorded versions of hits by the chart stars which have also been mixed up with familiar classical tunes. It has been done by members of the BBC Philharmonic and the Halle choir for a girls v boys musical battle to raise money for the BBC's Children In Need appeal, which takes place next month. Steve Pycroft, who recently created a baroque version of Justin Bieber's Beauty And A Beat for the station, has arranged the tracks, blending 1D's What Makes You Beautiful with Verdi's Anvil Chorus and putting Little Mix chart-topper Wings with Wagner's Ride Of The Valkyries. The tunes - which were recorded at the BBC's MediaCity base in Salford today - will be released as downloads in the near future to raise money for the charity and the winner of the battle will be the biggest seller. The all-female set of performers includes Radio 3 New Generation Artists and mezzo-sopranos Kitty Whately and Clara Mouriz, as well as winner of the London Handel singing competition Ruby Hughes. Their rivals feature tenor Robin Tritschler, baritone Jonathan McGovern and countertenor Tim Mead.
