Keane announce plans to split up

Keane have announced plans to split up.

Lead singer Tom Chaplin wants to go solo and the band's upcoming greatest hits album The Very Best of Keane will be their last record together.

The Sun broke the news and a spokesman for the band confirmed to Digital Spy: "Keane are taking a break after the Best Of to pursue their own projects."

The band's award-winning main songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley is now planning to collaborate with other pop stars, having already worked with the likes of Kylie Minogue and Gwen Stefani.

Tom, Tim, Richard Hughes and Jesse Quin are said to remain close friends and want to go out on a high.

Tom and Tim have been friends since school and formed the band at university in 1993 under the name Lotus Eaters.

It was recently reported that Lily Allen will cover their 2004 hit Somewhere Only We Know for this year's John Lewis Christmas advert.
