Williams set to match Presley feat

Robbie Williams could equal Elvis Presley's tally of chart-topping albums if he claims the 1,000th number one next weekend.

He is up against acts such as JLS and Jake Bugg to achieve the milestone in the Official Album Chart, succeeding Lady Gaga who is currently in the top slot with Artpop.

Robbie is favourite to land the coveted position with the just-released Swings Both Ways - and the first ever number one, 57 years ago, was the big band classic Songs For Swingin' Lovers by Frank Sinatra.

Since the album chart was launched by Record Mirror in 1956, The Beatles have had the greatest success with 15 number ones and 174 weeks at the summit, while Madonna is runner up with the second highest number of chart-toppers, numbering 12.

Elvis is third - and the highest ranking male solo artist - with 11, but Swings Both Ways would equal that feat. Robbie currently shares fourth place along with the Rolling Stones and U2, all on 10 number one albums.

But he will face competition from JLS for their greatest hits collection Goodbye and Bugg's second album Shangri-la, with early sales reports set to indicate who is ahead from Tuesday.

Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot said: "This is a hugely significant landmark in the history of the music industry. While the Official Singles Chart is the fast-moving, barometer of pop music tastes, the Official Albums Chart reflects the broader tastes of British music fans and their attachment to outstanding song collections.

"The list of albums which have topped the albums chart over the years underlines just how important it is, including iconic titles such as The Beatles' Sgt Pepper and Revolver, The Stones' Exile On Main Street, David Bowie's Aladdin Sane, Led Zeppelin IV, Queen's A Night At The Opera, Michael Jackson's Thriller - right up to Amy Winehouse's Back To Black, Adele's 21 and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories."
