Ferguson: Music was my therapy

Rebecca Ferguson has revealed that she had doubts over the making of her second album, as she battled depression.

The X Factor runner-up, who finished second to Matt Cardle in 2010, admitted she almost put the recording of Freedom on hold while she dealt with her emotions, following a lawsuit with her former management company.

"I was depressed and I remember turning to my label and saying that I am not sure whether I should do this album," she told the Daily Mail.

"They turned to me and said, 'Becks, take a couple of months off,' but in the end I just said no. I need to create an album for when you're feeling as bad as I am feeling.

"Hopefully I have created the kind of music to pick you up when you're feeling down. And afterwards I did end up feeling better - it was like therapy," she added.

Mother-of-two Rebecca, whose new album will be out on December 2, revealed she wasn't prepared for the backlash surrounding her romance with One Direction's Zayn Malik.

The couple, who met on the ITV singing show, split after four months together. He is now engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards.

"That was my first mistake. I was 23, he was 18. Of course, if it was a 23-year-old guy dating an 18-year-old girl, no one would have batted an eyelid, but this way around was a big deal, apparently," she told the Independent.

"I didn't realise that. I was just a hippy, free-loving person, but that's not a good thing to be in this industry. You can't just follow your heart."
