Prince treated for drug overdose days before death - report

Prince was rushed to hospital to be treated for a drug overdose just days before his death, a new report has claimed.

TMZ.com, who broke the news of Prince's tragic passing on Thursday morning (21Apr16), allege that the emergency landing the singer's private jet made in Moline, Illinois last Friday (15Apr16) was in fact because he needed treatment after overdosing. His representatives claimed the sudden landing was because Prince was battling the flu, but the website report it was strange that his plane was only 48 minutes from home before its emergency stop.

Sources in Moline told the outlet that after being rushed to the hospital from the jet, Prince was given a "save shot" by doctors - an injection usually used to balance the effects of an opiate.

Medical personnel then advised Prince to stay in the hospital for a further 24 hours. But when his team's demands for a private room weren't met, the singer and his entourage decided to head home, TMZ continue.

The website claims that Prince left the hospital just three hours after arriving, and boarded a plane to fly home. But when he left the hospital, the singer "was not doing well", an insider told TMZ.

Authorities in Minnesota are said to be trying to get records from Prince's hospital stay in Moline to help them determine the official cause of death.

Prince's representatives have not commented on the allegations.

The Purple Rain icon passed away at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota at the age of 57. A transcript of the 911 call made from the compound has since been released, with an unidentified male calling medics at 9.43am.

"We have someone who is unconscious," the man begins the call, before clarifying his comment to: "Yea, we have um, yea, we have um, so, yea, um, the person is dead here."

The man continues to say "the people are just distraught" as the 911 dispatcher encourages him to find Prince's address so that medics can be sent out. When the dispatcher asks the man if he knows how the singer died, he replies: "I don't know, I don't know".

Since his death, countless stars have come forward to pay tribute to the singer, including Madonna, Katy Perry, Elton John, Will Smith, Rita Ora and Tilda Swinton.
