Tom Jones uses gig to dedicate song to late wife

Tom Jones dedicated one of his new songs to his late wife Lady Melinda Rose Woodward at a concert in London on Wednesday (08Jun16).

The veteran musician used his performance at the British capital's Hampton Court Palace venue to pay tribute to Melinda, known as Linda, who died in April (16) aged 75, after a battle with cancer.

As part of his set he played song Take My Love (I Want To Give It) from his album Long Lost Suitcase, and revealed it was one of her favourites.

According to editors at British newspaper The Sun Tom, 76, told the crowd, "This next song is from the new album Long Lost Suitcase and I love this song. It's probably my favourite song from the album.

"Anytime I used to record I would take it home and play it to my wife first to see what she thought so I'm going to do this song. She loved this song so I'm going to do it for you."

The couple had been married for 59 years at the time of Linda's death and the Welsh crooner has admitted that he had considered quitting music during a previous battle she fought against cancer.

In April (16) Tom cancelled the Asian leg of his world tour to be with Linda, but after she passed away he announced he would return to performing to ease his grief.

"Seeing some unexpected press over the weekend, I came to the conclusion that singing really is my best therapy," he wrote on his Facebook page. "Music is so important to me—it’s my life, and through the brightest and darkest of times it has embedded a soundtrack to all my memories.

"So, it means a huge amount to be able to continue to perform for such a loyal and giving audience; your support has been uplifting and doesn’t go unnoticed. See you all at the shows this Summer."

Speaking to Dylan Jones, the editor of Britain's GQ magazine at the Hay literature festival earlier this month (Jun16), in what was his first public appearance since Linda's death, Tom spoke movingly about his wife's passing, saying coping with it was "the hardest thing I've ever done in my life".

The U.K. leg of Tom's world tour continues on Friday (10Jun16) with a concert at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England.
