Deep Purple cancel shows as Ian Gillan is hospitalised

Ian Gillan is in hospital after a medical emergency. No details of his condition have been made public.

Deep Purple have called off two concerts that were set for this weekend. A message on the band's Facebook page said they were unable to play at the QI Arena in Leipzig that evening or at the Sporthalle in Hamburg the following night, and that the cancellations followed the medical emergency involving Gillan and his current hospitalisation.

The band also acknowledged that the news came at short notice and said they shared the disappointment of their fans in both cities. Gillan, the group and their team are now looking for a suitable date to reschedule the two shows.

In an interview with Uncut in November 2025, the 81-year-old singer spoke about a problem with his eyes. "It's one of those things," he said. "I've only got 30 per cent vision. That won't get better."

Several months later, the Smoke on the Water vocalist told the same magazine that talk of him retiring because of his eyesight was untrue. In June he said he would stop when he no longer had the strength or when continuing became embarrassing, adding that he would not carry on simply for the sake of it. So far, he said, things were working out and he was still standing, just about, when he left the stage after a show.

Deep Purple's Splat! World Tour is due to run for the rest of the year, with the last date booked in Poland for June 2027.
