Meg Mathews opens up about secret breast cancer fight

Meg Mathews has spoken publicly for the first time about a breast cancer diagnosis she kept private, explaining why she chose a double mastectomy after learning the news in November 2024.

Mathews, who was once married to Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, told The Sun that the diagnosis did not leave her frightened. She said she refused to fall apart or feel sorry for herself, describing herself as strong and determined to come through it. Staying positive mattered, she added, because things could have taken a different turn and she could have relapsed.

Her history includes a long stretch of heavy drinking and drug use during the Britpop years of the 1990s. She gave up alcohol in 2017.

Although doctors suggested chemotherapy or radiotherapy, Mathews went ahead with a double mastectomy in March 2025, and her lymph nodes were taken out during the operation. Eleven days later, she was told she was cancer-free. She described the choice as an easy one to make.

She joked that after so many breast operations the area no longer felt like her own, noting that she had been through five or six procedures since turning 30. Gallagher, she said, paid for one of them as a 30th birthday present.

The pair were among the most talked-about couples of the 1990s. They married in Las Vegas in 1997, and the marriage ended in divorce in under four years.
