Rita Ora to perform for Pope Francis at the Vatican

Rita Ora will sing for Pope Francis during an event honouring the life of Mother Teresa.

The singer and actress is one of the performers selected to appear at a concert being held at St Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy on 3 September (16), the day before the late Albanian Roman Catholic nun and missionary will be officially declared a saint.

Rita, who was born in Kosovo to Albanian parents, will sing the hymn What Child Is This? at the celebration, which will also feature famous Albanian singers such as Ermonela Jaho, Inva Mula and Saimir Pirgu, as well as traditional instrumental music.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night (30Aug16), Rita shared her excitement about travelling to Vatican City for the historic event.

“I looked at the guest list and I saw P.O.P.E….Pope?!” she exclaimed. “It’s a real honour and I don’t know if anyone’s done the whole Vatican venue thing before, it’s a bit interesting that the Vatican’s someone’s venue but it’s going to be fantastic.”

Rita added that she’s only now starting to come to terms with the significance of the event, and isn’t sure what she would say if she had the opportunity to speak with the Pontiff.

And while the 25-year-old claims to be more a “spiritual” rather than religious, she is thrilled to have been invited to the Vatican, the heart of the Catholic Church.

“It’s massive, I’m really looking forward to it,” she smiled.

Pope Francis announced in March (16) that Mother Teresa, who died in 1997, would be proclaimed a saint on 4 September (16).

Mother Teresa, who spent part of her life helping the poor in the Indian city of Calcutta, was born in 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia to an Albanian family from Kosovo.
