Gwen Stefani creating animated TV series

Gwen Stefani is expanding her TV resume by creating an animated series.

Kuu Kuu Harajuku, which will centre on a group of girls who form a band named HJ5, is a "dream come true" for the pop star.

Gwen says, "It's been incredible to see the Harajuku Girls and the world they live in come to life. I love that this is an animated series for young girls that celebrates creativity, imagination and individuality. I can't wait for everyone to see it!"

"Stefani (has always had a) love of pop art and lifelong admiration for the street fashion and creative youth culture found in the renowned Harajuku neighborhood of Tokyo, Japan," a press release adds. "It was while writing her first solo album that Stefani created the original Harajuku Girl characters as a celebration of the creativity and individualism she saw and loved in the Harajuku District."

Stefani will also serve as an executive producer for the 26-episode first series, and perform the show's theme song.

"The artwork is so beautiful and the whole series turned out better than I could have ever imagined," she continues.

Kuu Kuu Harajuku will premiere on U.S. network Nickelodeon next month (Oct16).

Gwen first started to incorporate the Harajuku Girls concept in the songs on her album Love. Angel. Music. Baby in 2004, but she received backlash.

"It's a beautiful thing in the world, how our cultures come together. I don't feel like I did anything but share that love," she told Time magazine in 2014. "You can look at it from a negative point of view if you want to, but get off my cloud. Because, seriously, that was all meant out of love. And the girls themselves, it was just a magical thing to get to know them."
