Tina Turner musical headed to London's West End

Tina Turner has given the thumbs up to a planned West End musical about her life.

The 77-year-old Simply the Best hitmaker has signed a deal with Dutch producer Joop van den Ende, and the project is scheduled to debut in London's theatre district in 2018.

Sources tell The Mirror producers have been seeking Tina's approval for several years, but she only recently gave the final go-ahead to Ende, who is the founder of Europe's largest live entertainment company, Stage Entertainment.

"Joop has been planning this musical for a long time now and Tina is really excited," a source tells the newspaper. β€œIt will be the life and times of Tina.”

This isn't the first time Tina's extraordinary has been documented - her rise in the music industry was chronicled in the loosely autobiographical 1993 film What's Love Got to Do with It. In the drama, Angela Bassett played Tina from the early stages of her career until she went solo in the early 1980s. The movie also featured Laurence Fishburne as Tina's abusive ex-husband Ike Turner, who discovered the music icon and partnered with her in the band Ike and Tina Turner before the pair divorced in 1978 after 16 years of marriage.

In her 1986 autobiography, I, Tina, the singer outlined the years of physical and emotional abuse she endured at the hands of Ike before she finally gained the courage to walk away from their marriage in 1976.

Tina is now happily married to Erwin Bach and lives in Switzerland after she renounced her United States citizenship in 2013, the same year she tied the knot with her second husband.

Tina announced her retirement from music in 2009.
