Snoop Dogg venturing back into TV with Tha Dogg Pound biopic

Snoop Dogg and Daz Dillinger want to create a TV drama detailing the rise of rap group Tha Dogg Pound.

The series would follow Daz and bandmate Kurupt's rise to stardom alongside Snoop, Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur during the early 1990s gangsta rap scene.

Daz told Deadline how he and Snoop had been inspired to create their own series after they were asked to help on other rap biopic projects.

"Snoop and I are always being asked to assist others with their Death Row (Records) projects because we were there from the beginning, until the demise," he explained. "We saw Dre leave, (Tu)Pac murdered, and we were forced to run the company when Suge Knight went back to prison. Our perspective is honest and unique. There are countless stories that the world has never heard about those early days."

In 2015 Straight Outta Compton, a film detailing the emergence of Dr. Dre's pioneering hip-hop group N.W.A., was a critical and commercial hit.

The success of the film has sparked a surge of interest in the U.S. West Coast gangsta rap scene, with Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me set for release in June (17).

Formed by Kurupt and Daz in 1992, Tha Dogg Pound appeared alongside Snoop on Dr. Dre's hit 1992 solo album The Chronic.

Snoop, Tupac and Tha Dogg Pound were signed to Dr. Dre and Knight's Death Row Records label, with all three acts putting out their own hit albums.

The group were the subject of 2005 documentary DPG Eulogy, documenting their turbulent time as one of the label's top acts.

According to Deadline editors, Daz and Snoop have approached a number of U.S. network executives with a view to bringing the series to TV.
