Dave Matthews at mum's bedside as she dies aged 89

Dave Matthews Band lead singer Dave Matthews' mother has passed away at the age of 89.

Valerie Matthews died at her home in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to an online obituary.

At the time of her death, Matthews, his brother, and his sister were reportedly by her bedside.

TMZ reported that the Matthews matriarch's health had declined due to natural causes.

"Val's children, grandchildren and great-grandchild were able to gather around her in the days leading up to her death. It was a time of great sadness but also one of joy, filled with laughter and music and stories," her obituary read, as reported in People magazine.

"Val's kindness, graciousness and humour shone through to the end. Her family will always treasure this time together."

Matthews' mum's ill health was the reason he dropped out as a performer at the FireAid concert, which was held last month to raise money for victims of the Los Angeles wildfires.

Valerie was born in South Africa in 1935 and met her husband, John Matthews, in Johannesburg. They had four children together.

After the family settled in the US, Valerie's daughter Anne was murdered by her husband in 1994. He committed suicide, leaving Valerie to raise his and Anne's two young children.

Valerie is survived by her three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
