Tyla was 'adamant' she would make it big in music industry

Tyla was "adamant" that she would make it big in the music industry.

In a recent interview with British Vogue, the South African hitmaker recalled the success of her first single, Getting Late, which was released in 2019.

"That video went..." Tyla recalled, pointing upwards to indicate its success. "Especially in South Africa and Africa. And from there I showed my parents that I was serious about this and that it is possible."

The 23-year-old explained that while her parents were hesitant, she was determined to develop her career.

"They didn't want me to be disappointed if things didn't go my way," the Water hitmaker explained. "But I was so adamant. I was going to make it happen no matter what."

Two years later, in 2021, Tyla signed to Epic Records and is now best known for her chart-topping hit Water, which she released as part of her self-titled debut album in 2024.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Grammy winner recalled being introduced to manager Colin Gayle, who has worked with the likes of Ne-Yo and 50 Cent.

"He wanted me to come in to record in a studio," she told the publication. "So I met him - my parents came with me - and I recorded my first song that day."

She then recalled that after meeting Colin, she was "literally going between school and the studio, school, studio, school, studio..."

While that final year at school was difficult, Tyla "knew this is what (she) wanted to do".
